Somvati Amavasya on 26 May 2025: What to do and when

Mumbai: In Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism), Amavasya — the new moon day — holds deep spiritual importance, especially when it falls on a Monday. This rare occurrence is known as Somvati Amavasya, a day considered highly auspicious for both spiritual upliftment and ancestral blessings. The alignment of Amavasya with a Monday, a day dedicated to Lord Shiva, adds further sanctity, making it an ideal time to seek divine grace and perform rituals for one’s forefathers (Pitru).

According to Hindu beliefs, offering prayers and performing holy baths and charity on Amavasya brings peace to the souls of departed ancestors. Special rituals such as Pind Daan are believed to help eliminate negative planetary influences (Grah Dosh) and attract blessings from forebears. Worshipping Lord Shiva on this day is also said to bring prosperity, good health, and spiritual protection.

Additionally, the Abhijit Muhurat — an auspicious period for any important undertaking — will last from 11:51 AM to 12:46 PM.

What to Donate on Somvati Amavasya

To please the ancestors and earn spiritual merit (punya), it is considered beneficial to donate items such as clothes, sweets, and food to the poor. Offerings of white items like rice, milk, sugar, or mishri (rock sugar) are also seen as especially auspicious on this day.
