Sourav Ganguly to get Mohun Bagan Ratna, Dimitri Petratos chosen best player

New Delhi: Former Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly would be conferred with the Mohun Bagan Ratna award while Dimitri Petratos would be recognised as last season’s best player, the club announced on Thursday.

Ganguly and Petratos would be presented with the prestigious honours at the club’s annual awards night on July 29, which commemorates the day Bagan became the first Indian side to win the IFA Shield in 1911.

“Sourav has donned the Mohun Bagan jersey for nine season in the local club circuit in Kolkata. It was during his Mohun Bagan days that he was first selected for the national team. So it is apt to recognise his contribution,” Bagan secretary Debashish Dutta told News9 Sports.

Ganguly is also a board member at Mohun Bagan Super Giant, the club’s football team, returning to the post after relinquishing the Board of Control for Cricket in India presidency.

India international Manvir Singh was chosen as the recipient of the Subhash Bhowmick award for the best forward for 2023-24 while Suhail Ahmed was adjudged the best youth player.

At the club’s executive committee meeting, it was also decided to honour Bimal Mukherjee the club’s captain during their maiden Calcutta Football League triumph in 1939, with the lifetime achievement award.

Australian Petratos helped Bagan win their maiden Indian Super League Shield last season, scoring 10 goals and making seven of them, to win the competition’s Golden Ball for the best player.

The Arun Lal award for the best cricketer would be given to Avilin Ghosh while Karunamoy Mahato would be handed the Pranab Banerjee award for best athlete.
