Military units in eastern Spain continued the search for missing people Saturday after flash floods swept through the region.
Extra military units were dispatched via navy ship from Murcia to Valencia to support the search and help clear flood-damaged streets.
Spain’s deadliest natural disaster in living memory has left at least 205 people dead with untold numbers still missing, and countless lives in tatters.
In a matter of minutes, flash floods caused by heavy downpours swept away everything in their path. With no time to react, people were trapped in vehicles, homes and businesses.
The storms concentrated over the Magro and Turia river basins and, in the Poyo riverbed, produced walls of water that overflowed riverbanks, catching people unaware as they went on with their daily lives, with many coming home from work on Tuesday evening.
As police and emergency workers continue the grim search for bodies, authorities appear overwhelmed by the enormity of the disaster, and survivors are relying on the esprit de corps of volunteers who have rushed in to fill the void.
