New Delhi: After a historic series victory in India, New Zealand men’s cricket team have returned to Sri Lanka to compete in the white-ball leg just. The Black Caps will start a new era in white-ball cricket under the leadership of spin bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner.
New Zealand will take on Sri Lanka in the first T20 International match on Saturday as they play their first match in the shortest format since the infamous exit at the T20 World Cup preliminary stage in June. Consequently, star player Kane Williamson stepped down from the captaincy role.
Santner has been named interim captain only for the Sri Lanka tour as the team management will take a call on the role of a permanent captain later in the summer. Many of the Test regulars were given rest in order to prepare for the upcoming three-match Test series against England at home. Glenn Phillips, Will Young, and Ish Sodhi are the only players part of the Kiwis’ squad from the victorious India series while Nathan Smith and wicketkeeper-batter Mitch Hay have been handed their debut.
On the other hand, hosts Sri Lanka are coming into the series with identical 2-1 series win against the West Indies in T20Is and ODIs. All-rounder Charith Asalanka will continue to lead the side in both the formats. The Sri Lankan bowling attack will be boasted by the return of young pacer Matheesha Pathirana after the 21-year-old missed the T20Is against the West Indies.
