How Indian indices and commodities performed

Indian indices closed almost flat on Friday as anticipation for a rate cut announcement indication by US Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell peaked. Gold prices moderated while prices cl8mbed up indicating a wait and watch mood for investors.

While Bharti Airtel, JSW Steel and Bajaj Finserv were the top gainers, Infosys, Asian Paints and HDFC Bank were top drags.

US indices surge after US Fed chair’s speech

US Fed chair Jerome Powell said the time had come for the policy rate to support the economy with inflation largely under control and unemployment indicating a cooldown in labour markets. Indian indices may register a surge on Monday after this announcement since investors may turn bullish on the prospects of a rate cut in September at the next US FOM meeting.

Gold rates surged last week amid expectations of 3 rate cuts this year. However, while those expectations may have been kept on hold, Powell’s definitive speech will finally enable to Fed to bring down the policy rate form its 23-year high. The US Fed was aiming for a cooldown in the economy, and a soft landing into recession to prevent the economy from overheating.
