New Delhi: Cancer is the leading cause of death across the world. The factors contributing to cancer include genetics, ageing, living environment, tobacco and alcohol consumption, ageing and more. Moreover, it is also believed that people with low income are at higher risk of developing cancer than wealthy people. Demystifying this, a recent study has revealed that wealthy people are genetically at higher risk of cancer as compared to poor people.
The study was conducted at the University of Helsinki in Finland and researched the link between socio-economic status and a range of diseases. Some reports also note that there are forms of cancer that are diagnosed more often in people with more money. One of those cancers is breast and prostate cancer, according to the study, rich people are at higher risk for these cancers.
Low-income group people at higher risk of diabetes
On the other hand, less affluent people are genetically more prone to diabetes and arthritis, along with depression, alcoholism and lung cancer, reported The New York Times. For the study, the research team collected health data of the participants, their socio-economic status and genomics for 280,000 citizens of Finland who are between the ages of 35 to 80.
Impact of polygenic scores on disease risk
According to Dr Hagenbeek, one of the researchers, understanding that the impact of polygenic scores on disease risk is dependent on context, may lead to further stratified screening protocols. Giving an example Dr Hagenbeek said, that in the future, screening protocols for breast cancer may be adapted so that females with high genetic risk and who are highly educated receive before or more common screening than females with lower genetic risk or less education.
