New Delhi: Pune-born ace shooter Swapnil Kusale made the country proud on Thursday after clinching India’s third medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. Kusale won a bronze medal in the 50m rifle 3 positions, claiming India’s first-ever medal in the category at the Olympics. Swapnil qualified for the final round after finishing 7th with a total score of 590.

This was the third medal for India at the showpiece event and all three have come from shooting till now. After a gap of 12 years, the Indian shooters have achieved glory at the first place in the biggest sporting extravaganza in the world. Kusale made a superb comeback from the fifth spot to shoot a total of 451.4 in the eight-shooter final and stand on the third position on the podium.

Earlier, Indian shooters Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh made the country proud by bagging the first two bronze medals for India.

How much money did government spend on Swapnil?

The Olympic bronze medallist, who made the country immensely proud, was provided financial assistance of over 17.50 lakh rupees under the TOPS scheme and a huge sum of Rs.1,42,69,647 under the Annual Calendar for Training and Competition.

Born in a family with agricultural background, the 28-year-old Indian shooter started his journey at the age of just 14 after his father enrolled him into the state government’s programme dedicated towards sports. Having trained in various sports for over an year, he finally chose shooting as his passion and began the hard work since 2010.

Suresh Kusale, Swapnil’s father, told Mid-Day that since the weapons are quite expensive, he had to spend major part of his salary on Swapnil’s shooting pursuits. He event went on to take a loan of Rs 25 lakh and had sell two plots of land to mange the expenses.
