New Delhi: Former fielding coach of the Indian men’s team T Dilip, is set to return to the national setup. It is being learnt that Dilip will accompany Team India on their tour to England next month in June. India are set to travel to England for playing five-Test matches beginning with the series opener on June 20 in Edgbaston.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, the Hyderabad-based coach, who previously served under former head coach Rahul Dravid and later under currently head coach Gautam Gambhir for just close to one year has been given one year temporary extension by the BCCI. His contract was initially set to run till May and it was presumed that the Indian cricket board would not renew it.
BCCI gives extension to Dilip
The report additionally mentions that Dilip, Abhishek Nayar and a few other members of the support staff were informed by the BCCI that they would be relived of their duties following the expiry of their contracts. But now the Indian cricket board has decided otherwise and will five him a contract extension of 12 months beginning with the England Test series.
The report also mentions that since these coaches were close to Rohit Sharma so the BCCI was not much keen on extending their contracts, with Gambhir’s role coming into play in the Indian team setup. However, it is being learnt that Rohit has convinced both the BCCI and Gambhir to retain Dilip as the fielding coach. Nayar, meanwhile, has decided to step down and take up his role with the Kolkata Knight Riders team.
As per sources, Rohit, even after announcing his retirement from the longest format, requested Gambhir to retain Dilip. Ryan ten Doeschate, who was initially expected to replace him, will remain as an assistant coach. Meanwhile, young Shubman Gill was chosen as the skipper of the Indian team to lead in the England Tests.
