Tall claims: Is having good height a risk factor for Cancer? Research finds link

New Delhi: Cancer is the most serious health burden that the world is experiencing currently. In India, the cases are rapidly rising and are expected to see a major jump in the upcoming years. About one in every nine people is expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, according to ICMR. There are multiple factors behind the cause of cancer, including poor lifestyle, smoking, alcohol consumption, unhealthy weight gain and more but most recently, the team of researchers have linked cancer and your height. This might be surprising to many but according to the World Cancer Research Fund, there is a strong correlation between your height and the chances of developing cancer.

The researchers state that the higher height of an individual has more possibility of developing cancers of the pancreas, large bowel, uterus (endometrium), ovary, prostate, kidney, breast and skin cancer.

Theories behind height and cancer

Behind the findings, the researchers have attached various theories:

First: Taller people have more cells

Accoridng to the research, cancer mostly occurs due to the accumulation of damage to genes that mostly takes place when cells divide. More the time, the cells divide, the more damage is collected and hence the possibility of cancer increases. This particular theory is backed by a few studies that suggest men are at heightened risk of developing cancer as compared to women because on average they are taller than women.

Second: Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)

Another theory shows that insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is also one of the triggering factors leading to cancerous growth in people who are tall. Concurring this, studies have found that those with higher levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) have a heightened danger of developing breast or prostate cancer.

Are tall people at higher risk for cancer?

Studies have revealed that there is a strong association between cancer and height but it is not very common. However, it is imperative to pay attention to the kind of lifestyle they are living. It is always suggested to follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly and healthy a healthy diet.
