New Delhi: A teenager has been taken into custody on suspicion of “malicious communications” after Kai Havertz, an Arsenal striker, and his wife were subjected to internet abuse. The 17-year-old St Albans lad has been released on bail pending further investigation, according to Hertfordshire Police. Following Arsenal’s FA Cup loss to Manchester United earlier this month, Havertz’s wife Sophia shared two direct messages she had received—one of which contained threats on the couple’s unborn child—on her Instagram account.
After a 1-1 draw, United prevailed 5-3 on penalties after the 25-year-old German attacker missed a chance to win the match in normal time and had United goalie Altay Bayindir stop his penalty in the shootout. After dating since 2018, the pair were married last year, and Sophia revealed her pregnancy in November. While Mikel Arteta, the manager of the Gunners, stated that online abuse of players has “terrible consequences” and should be “eradicated from the game,” Sophia responded to the remarks by writing that the offender should be “ashamed” of themselves.

A few weeks back, Sophia Havertz, wife of Kai posted two screenshots to her Instagram story, one of which featured a threat to “slaughter” her unborn child. After losing to holders United on penalties, Arsenal was eliminated from the cup. After having a penalty saved in the shootout, Germany forward Havertz missed a close-range attempt to win the match at the Emirates Stadium.
“For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me… I hope you are ashamed of yourself,” she posted.
“I’m not sure what to even say, but please guys be more respectful, we are better than this,” she said on social media in reaction to the threat to her child.
It was truly disturbing for both Kai and Sophia, as there were multiple threats that were given to them. The toxic fanbase stooped a little too low as these kind of cases keep growing in world football. Justice was eventually served when the authorities managed to track down the person behind these messages.
