Hyderabad: Twenty-eight farmers were airlifted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on late Thursday evening after they were trapped in the flood waters of Peddavagu Project in Narayanapuram village, Aswaraopet mandal, Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana.
The incident occurred due to heavy flooding of the Aswaraopet pedda Vagu stream following heavy rain in the district. Officials lifted the gates of the project downstream after the inflow of rain water and unaware of the release of water, farm workers were caught in it.
Disaster Management teams managed to rescue 28 farm workers who were trapped in the agricultural fields.
Kothagudem District Collector Jitesh told media that the process of moving people from the villages to resettlement camps is underway. Irrigation Department Secretary Rahul Bojja said that the flood situation had stabilized and senior officials are on the scene to monitor the situation.
Around 51 people were trapped in flood waters and reports indicate that all of them were brought to safety. District Disaster Response Forces (DDRF) boats and Navy Helicopter from Eluru, Andhra Pradesh rescued 41 people while the remaining ten people were brought to safety later.
Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari took cognizance of the situation from Bhadradri Kothagudem Collector, SP, DGP and others. Rahul Bojja informed the Chief Secretary that gates had to be lifted due to 40,000 cusecs of rain water inflows into the project.
Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department issued red alert for Kothagudem on July 19, 20 along with Khammam, Mahabubabad districts over the next few days. Orange and yellow alert have been issued for other districts.
