Telangana: Ex-speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy joins Congress, quits BRS

Hyderabad: BRS MLA and former speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy  joined Congress in the presence of Telangana CM Revanth Reddy in Hyderabad on Friday.

Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy accompanied Revanth Reddy in yet another round of ‘Operation Akarash’ which was paused for Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, CM Revanth Reddy said, “Pocharam garu joined the Congress for the welfare of Telangana farmers. We are going to take a decision on the procedures for farmer loan waiver today in the ministerial meeting and we need his cooperation to complete the unfinished projects in Nizamabad district. We will include all those who are necessary for the welfare of farmers.”

Speculation is rife that many more MLAs from BRS will join Congress in the coming days. BRS’s humiliating defeat in the recent Lok Sabha elections coupled with defeat in Assembly elections is likely the trigger for the exodus of legislators from BRS.  The party led by KCR was unable to secure even one seat in the lower house of Parliament.

Key leaders such as Rajendranagar MLA Prakash Goud, Bhadrachalam MLA Tellam Venkata Rao, Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, MP Ranjith Reddy, Kadiyam Srihari and Kadiyam Kavya have  joined the party in recent times.

Who is Pocharam Srinivas Reddy?

Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, who won from Banswada Assembly constituency in 2023 Assembly elections, previously served as the Speaker of the Assembly from 2019 to 2023. From 2014 to 2019, he served as the Minister of Agriculture in KCR’s cabinet.

He joined the TDP in 1984 and was with the party for 27 years before quitting it to join the BRS. Rumours are abound that he maybe given a cabinet position in the state government.
