Washington: President Donald Trump, who is threatening every global partner of the United States with tariffs, has said that if the Elon Musk-led Tesla sets up a factory in India to avoid that country’s tariffs, it would be unfair to the US.
Ever since his election win in November 2024, Trump has aggressively pitched for increasing tariffs significantly on the countries having trade ties with the United States. It may be noted that hours before meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, Trump announced reciprocal tariffs.
“Impossible” for Musk to sell a car in India: Trump
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, the newly-elected US President claimed to tell PM Modi that India charges the highest tariffs in the world. Trump said it is “impossible” for Musk to sell a car in India.
“Every country in the world takes advantage of us, and they do it with tariffs… It is impossible to sell a car, practically, in, as an example, India,” he said.
“..If he (Musk) built the factory in India, that’s okay, but that’s unfair to us. It’s very unfair,” Trump said in the interview.
Notably, Musk was also present during the interview. The Tesla chief has been appointed as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency by Donald Trump.
When asked for details about his conversation with PM Modi on tariffs, Trump said, “I told Prime Minister Modi… Here’s what you do. We are going to… be very fair with you.”
Tesla starts recruitment in India
Trump’s statement comes days after American electric carmaker Tesla opened recruitments for various roles in Indian cities – Delhi and Mumbai. In a social media post, the Musk-headed company said it is looking for professions – business operations analyst and customer support specialist.
