New Delhi: Today marks the fourth year since a legendary cricketer bid adieu to international cricket and left a legacy that remains unmatched. As India celebrated its 74th Independence Day amidst the doom and gloom orchestrated by the deadly COVID-19 virus, Indian cricket fans suffered an additional blow. On 15th August 2020, Iconic India captain MS Dhoni stunned the fans by announcing his retirement from international cricket.
The announcement was made via a social media post at 19.29 sharp in the evening. The news sent shockwaves across the cricketing fraternity with fans left in disbelief by Dhoni’s sudden revelation. All of a sudden, one of the most decorated careers in the history of Indian cricket came to an end. Dhoni hung up his boots as the most successful Indian captain in limited-overs cricket.
“Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me as Retired,” Dhoni wrote on Instagram along with the video. The video depicted Dhoni’s international journey from breaking into the national side, playing memorable knocks, winning trophies and getting run out in his last match for India.
With three ICC trophies to his name, Dhoni retired as the most successful captain in the history of Indian cricket.
Dhoni’s half-century against New Zealand in the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2019 remains his last international innings. Despite his best efforts, India lost a hard-fought contest against the Kiwis.
The significance of 19.29 timestamp
It is believed that Dhoni chose his retirement time at 7.29 pm as an ode to the Indian Army. Dhoni chose the time as it was the time of the last sunset in India on 15th August 2020. Guhar Moti in Gujarat, the westernmost point in India, sees the last sunset in the country and on the 74th Independence Day, the sun set in Guhar Moti at 7.29 pm.
