Toni Kroos named Germany’s Player of the Year 2023-24

New Delhi: Toni Kroos’ glorious farewell season has yet another accolade to show for it. The German midfield maestro is voted as Germany’s Player of the Year 2023-24, beating players like Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka. Kroos retired after winning the La Liga and UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid but failed to make it picture-perfect as Germany lost to Spain in the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

The award is presented every year by German sports magazine, Kicker. The German midfielder won the award once back in 2018, and he has won it again for his performances in the 2023/24 season. Kroos had a stellar season at Real Madrid, having 11 goal contributions in 48 appearances across all competitions. His tempo-controlling and passing abilities largely helped Ancelotti’s side clinch their 36th La Liga title, and become 15-time UEFA Champions League winners.

Toni Kroos received 285 votes in the poll, with Florian Wirtz receiving 246 votes and Granit Xhaka receiving 66. Around 751 Association of German Sports Journalists members voted in the poll to decide the winner of the award.

Xabi Alonso won the Coach of the Year award for the first time, with a staggering 503 votes. VFB Stuttgart manager, Sebastian Hoeness received 42 votes while Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt received 50. Bayer Leverkusen’s invincible season and terrific run across all competitions undoubtedly put the Spanish manager in a comfortable position to win the award.

Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen broke Bayern Munich’s 11-year streak in the Bundesliga and remained undefeated throughout the season. They reached the final of the UEFA Europa League in 2024, but Gasperini’s Atalanta handed Leverkusen their first defeat of the season across all competitions.
