Towhid Hridoy slapped with four-match ban from Bangladesh Cricket Board

New Delhi: Middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy has been banned for four matches with immediate effect, confirmed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday. Having made 77 appearances for Bangladesh so far across the white-ball formats, he is currently captaining the Mohammedan Sporting Club in the ongoing Bashundhara Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPDCL).

Hridoy was handed a one-match ban earlier as well but it was deferred following the players’ coming out against the ban. Now, he has been found guilty of breaching BCB’s Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel during a DPDCL match against Gazi Group Cricketers that was held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on April 26, 2025 (Saturday).

In the game, Hridoy was not happy with a particular decision from the on-field umpire which led him to show dissent towards it. The charge was brought by on-field umpires Ali Arman Rajon and Moniruzzaman Tinku, third umpire Muhammad Kamruzzaman, and fourth official ATM Ikram. Hridoy stood still at the crease for a while despite being caught during the last game.

The 24-year-old notably denied the charge and opted for a hearing, but failed to appear in it. “Mr. Hridoy denied the charge and opted to contest it at a full disciplinary hearing. However, despite prior communication, he failed to appear at the hearing scheduled in the umpires’ dressing room,” the BCB’s statement read, on Saturday.

Proceeding with the matter, match referee Akhtar Ahmad imposed a sanction on Hridoy, which was in accordance with Clause 5.2.6 of the Code of Conduct for the DPDCL 2024-25 – a fine of Taka 10,000 (Ten Thousand Taka) and the addition of one demerit point.

What do the BCB laws say?

Hridoy was found guilty of committing a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the BCB Code of Conduct, which accounts for “Showing Dissent at an Umpire’s Decision during a Match.” As per BCB laws, Level 1 offences carry a minimum sanction of a warning and a maximum penalty of Taka 40,000 and/or one or two demerit points.

“This latest demerit point brings Mr. Hridoy’s total to eight (8) demerit points, including seven (7) accumulated from previous breaches. As a result, he will serve a four (4)-match suspension, effective immediately,” the BCB statement added.

Towhid Hridoy faced a one-match ban earlier as well but had it deferred after the players voiced against the ban. After the latest sanction on him, his total demerit points have increased to eight.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
