Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing mounting pressure to step down as leader of the Liberal Party amidst growing discontent among liberal MPs. Reports suggest that a growing number of Liberal MPs are calling for Trudeau’s resignation, citing significant by-election losses in Toronto-St. Paul’s and Montreal and also a desire for new leadership ahead of the next federal election. As per the claims made in several reports, the Liberal MPs are planning to formally request Justin Trudeau to step down during an upcoming caucus meeting. The latest development has come up after Trudeau triggered an escalation of tension with India over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Nijjar.
Sean Casey, MP for Charlottetown, has become the first to publicly demand Trudeau’s resignation, stating that constituents are expressing a strong desire for change. Other MPs, including Wayne Long and Alexandra Mendes, have also voiced this sentiment, indicating a growing faction within the party pushing for a leadership change.
Liberal MPs Reportedly Planning To Demand Trudeau’s Resignation Soon
Reports further suggest that at least 20 MPs are prepared to support this call, with plans for a written demand to be presented soon before the Canadian Prime Minister. However, it remains unclear what will be the next course of steps if Trudeau refuses to resign.
Additionally, Jagmeet Singh’s recent decision to withdraw the New Democratic Party (NDP) from the Trudeau government has prompted some Liberal MPs to express concerns that without NDP backing, the Liberals may struggle to maintain their base and counter Conservative advances in the upcoming elections.
With his decision to take back the support from Trudeau’s government, Singh ended a confidence-and-supply agreement established in 2022. This agreement was intended to last until mid-2025, allowing the Liberals to govern with NDP backing.
Now, with the Conservatives holding a nearly 20-point lead over the Liberals, according to CBC’s Poll Tracker, the party is under pressure to rethink its campaign strategies and messaging to regain voter trust.
According to the experts, amidst the latest turn of political events in Canada and the escalating tension with India, Trudeau’s leadership has come under a major siege leading the future of the Liberal Party to remain hanging in the balance.
Moreover, recent polls indicate that both Trudeau’s Liberals and Singh’s NDP are experiencing declining popularity. The Conservatives are positioned favourably, raising concerns among Liberal MPs about their chances in the upcoming election scheduled for October 2025.
Trudeau’s Father Too Was Accused Of Mishandling Ties With India
However, this is not the first time that Khalistani extremists have caused major friction in India-Canada ties. Earlier, Justin Trudeau’s father Pierre Trudeau, a former Canadian Prime Minister too, was accused of mishandling ties with India as Canadian authorities had failed to act against Khalistani extremists in the 1980s.
Pierre had refused India’s request for the extradition of Talwinder Singh Parmar, a member of Babbar Khalsa, who fled to Canada after being accused of killing two police personnel in Punjab .
