Trump’s Hush Money Case Proceedings Paused After US Election Win

New Delhi: A New York state judge has temporarily paused proceedings in the criminal case against Donald Trump involving hush money paid to an adult star, soon after he won the presidential poll, according to court documents released on Tuesday, reported Reuters.

Judge Juan Merchan was expected to decide by Tuesday whether to overturn Trump’s conviction, after a Supreme Court ruling in July on presidential immunity. Trump was also set for sentencing on November 26.

Prosecutors from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office asked Judge Merchan for a delay in an email on Sunday, citing Trump’s November 5 US presidential election win and his upcoming inauguration in January 2025.

Trump had petitioned the DA’s office to consent to a postponement, as per the email.

The prosecutors noted, ‘These are unprecedented circumstances.’ In response, Judge Merchan granted the request and paused all proceedings in the case until November 19.

In May , Donald Trump became the first former US President to be convicted of felony crimes, as a New York jury found him guilty on all 34 charges related to a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to adult actress Stormy Daniels, who alleged they had an affair.

However, Trump, 78, pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing in the case.
