New Delhi: At least two people died and over 500 have been arrested by the French police after clashes broke out across France as the fans celebrated Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)’s maiden Champions League victory. PSG defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the final in Munich to win their first Champions League title, bringing an end to the club’s long wait for their maiden crown.
As per Reuters, France’s Ministry of Interior confirmed that a total of 559 people were arrested across France as clashes broke out between fans and security officers at multiple places after the Champions League final. 491 people were arrested in the capital, Paris, which was the centre of the euphoria, while others were arrested in other parts of the country.
Thousands of fans took to the streets in Paris, cheering, singing and celebrating the home team’s victory in Europe’s biggest club competition. There were heavy fireworks across the city as the traffic came to a standstill, and many were left stuck on the streets amid the intense celebrations, which lasted throughout the night.

Fans ended up clashing with security officials after crowds took over the Champs-Elysees in Paris. As per Reuters, the authorities also reported two deaths during the clashes amid the celebrations in the country. A 23-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a car while riding a scooter, while a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in his chest.
As per Reuters, the 17-year-old was killed in Dax, a southwestern town in France, in a gathering to celebrate PSG’s Champions League victory. While his death occurred during the celebrations, the prosecutor’s office said that it is not known whether the death was related to the Champions League final. The accused has been on the run.
Meanwhile, the man riding a scooter was hit by a car near Paris’s 15th arrondissement, which is about 2km from the Champs-Elysees, which was the epicentre of the celebrations. At least four people from the same family were left injured after a car ran over a group of fans celebrating PSG’s victory in Grenoble in southeastern France. The driver was arrested by police.
22 police officers, 7 firefighters injured in clashes
The French interior ministry also confirmed that at least 22 police officers sustained injuries and seven firefighters were also injured during the clashes between fans and security officials in various parts of the country. 264 vehicles were also set on fire during the riots with 192 people sustaining injuries. Many of those arrested were illegally possessing fireworks and causing disorder during the celebrations.
