Typhoid cases: How to differentiate between symptoms of typhoid and normal fever

New Delhi: With the onset of the monsoon, various diseases are on the rise including flu, and vector-borne diseases like dengue and diarrhoea. Many cities in India are currently noticing a rise in typhoid cases including Telangana, as per reports. Typhoid fever or enteric fever is a type of bacterial infection caused by the bacteria called Salmonella Typhi. It easily spreads through contaminated water and food. Once you ingest the Salmonella Typhi bacterium, it starts to multiply and dissolve into the bloodstream.

Dr Jagdish Kathwate, Consultant Neonatologist & Paediatrician, Motherhood Hospital Kharadi Pune told News9, “One can experience a range of symptoms like stomach pain, nosebleeds, hallucination or confusion, fatigue, lack of appetite, allergic reactions like red spots on the abdomen and chest, constipation, cough, nausea, episodes of vomiting, headache, and fever.”

Symptoms usually exacerbate 4 to 15 days

These symptoms usually exacerbate 4 to 15 days after coming in contact with Salmonella Typhi. “The starting stage of typhoid fever is experiencing a high fever that starts as mild and typically rises in the afternoon or evening. If your fever lasts for more than 2 to 4, you should consider consulting a doctor for prompt diagnosis,” said Dr Kathwate.

Explain to your doctor about the list of symptoms you are experiencing and for how many days. Further, your doctor might prescribe certain tests like widal tests, CBC tests, blood cultures tests, stool, and urine tests to confirm if you are diagnosed with typhoid.

How to differentiate between symptoms of Typhoid and normal fever?

According to Dr Kathwate, “The most common mistake people often make is that they tend to ignore these symptoms and try to treat them with home remedies. It is vital to understand that early detection can lead to prompt diagnosis resulting in speedy recovery. With the help of early diagnosis, typhoid fever can be treated in a week or two with prescribed antibiotics and medications. Being vaccinated for typhoid can significantly help prevent typhoid fever which can lead to serious health complications and even death in some cases. It is helpful for those who are planning to travel abroad or to places that have more typhoid cases.”
