UFC 304: Belal Muhammad crowned new welterweight champion after beating Leon Edwards in hometown

New Delhi: Belal Muhammad became the new UFC Welterweight Champion at UFC 304 in Co-Live, Manchester, England on July 28, Sunday. Belal broke Leon Edwards’s eight-year unbeaten streak by defeating Edwards via unanimous decision (48-47,48-47,49-46).

Belal took no time to takedown Champion in the first 20 seconds into the fight. Edwards had no answers in the first round to tackle the takedowns as Belal started the fight with a dominant first-round victory over Edwards. Belal opened the second round with full control to again takedown Edwards a couple of times in the octagon.

Edwards came back in the third round by turning the tables as he got the first takedown in the bout and attempted a rear-naked choke on Belal but Belal escaped from the choke. Edwards started the fourth round by landing multiple strikes but Belal revamped his momentum and survived the round. The final round was a proper dominance from Belal before the last 30 seconds.

Edward’s corner motivated him before the fifth round saying to finish Belal in the fifth round same as Kamaru Usman’s fight but Belal took control in the last round and didn’t give a chance to the champion but in the last 30 seconds Edwards broke Belal’s nose but ran out of time to change the outcome of the fight. Belal won his 10 consecutive fights and became the new UFC Welterweight Champion.

Belal also became the first Palestine heritage fighter to win any title in the UFC and created history by broking Edward’s 9-year long unbeaten streak. Belal’s next fight might be against Shavkat Rakhmonov as he is No. 3 ranked in welterweight division.
