New Delhi: Alex Pereira successfully defended his Light heavyweight title in the UFC 307 at the Delta Centre, Salt Lake City, Utah on October 6, Sunday. Pereira defeated Khalil Rountree Jr. via TKO in the fourth round. Rountree Jr. started well the fight and dominated the first two rounds.
It was a hard-fought battle for Pereira but he showed his class and knocked out Rountree Jr. in the fourth round. After the fight, Pereira said ‘This was one of the toughest fights’ and lauded Rountree Jr. for his amazing performance.
In the co-main event, Julianna Pena defeated Raquel Pennington to become the new women’s bantamweight champion. The fight went to the distance and judges scored the bout on the opening round scores. The first round was fought on the feet and later in the fight, Pena attempted submission moves.
Pennington controlled the fight in the fourth round by dropping Pena with a solid right hook and fought great on the feet in the fifth round as well. Pena didn’t gas out in the fight and won the fight via split decision. After the win, Pena called out retired Amanda Nunes for the trilogy fight.
The Featherweight division legend Jose Aldo was defeated by Mario Bautista via split decision. It was the first loss for Aldo after coming out of retirement. Bautista started the fight aggressively by landing some shots and attempting some takedown shots.
Aldo had a better second round by focusing on his boxing skills and dominated the round. In the last round, it was the closest of all round. Bautista controlled the initial round with his grappling skills but Aldo was able to use his stand-up range and strike but judges felt Bautista was better in the night and declared him the winner.
