In response to Ukraine’s escalating offensive, local authorities in Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, ordered residents to evacuate early Monday morning. The evacuation comes as Ukrainian forces intensified their incursion into Russian territory.
Belgorod regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov addressed the situation in a video posted to Telegram, telling residents in the Krasnoyarsk district to leave due to “enemy activity.” He described the situation as “an alarming morning.”
Ukraine’s incursion into Russia began last week
The offensive began last Tuesday when Ukrainian troops launched a surprise attack, initially pushing into parts of Russia’s Kursk region. The campaign has since expanded into the neighboring Belgorod region, marking Kyiv’s most significant incursion into Russian territory since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Ukraine’s operation has lifted the morale of its troops
This operation has been a morale booster for Ukraine and its Western allies, who, while cautiously supportive, have acknowledged the boldness of Kyiv’s strategy. Despite repeated assurances from Kremlin spokespersons that Russia had the situation under control, Ukrainian forces have managed to advance up to 40 kilometers into Russian territory since the offensive began. Reports indicate that Ukrainian troops have successfully repelled Russia’s attempts to reinforce their defending forces.
Russia has vowed to deliver a ‘tough response’
On Sunday, the Russian foreign ministry issued a warning, stating that Moscow would deliver a “tough response” to the surprise incursion.
Later that day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of starting a fire in one of the cooling towers at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control. Russian state media, however, claimed that Ukraine was responsible for the blaze and reported that the fire had been extinguished by this morning.
As Ukraine’s offensive builds, the situation in the region remains tense, with both sides preparing for further developments.
