New Delhi: Once regarded as the future star of Indian cricket, young pace sensation Umran Malik went unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction on Monday. No teams showed interest in securing the services of the right-arm fast bowler after his name was announced at the auction. Umran was part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2024.
One of the fastest bowlers in the country at present, Umran rose to fame after making his debut in IPL 2021 where his raw pace caught the attention of many. His ability to consistently clock over 150kph saw SRH retain the pacer from Jammu & Kashmir for Rs 4 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Umran repaid the faith by taking the season by storm.
Umran played 14 matches in IPL 2022 and picked up 22 wickets, including a five-wicket haul to prove his worth. He was soon fast-tracked into the Indian team and went on to make his debut for the Men in Blue in June 2022. Umran played 10 ODIs and 8 T20Is for India before falling in the pecking order as form and fitness issues led to his downfall.
Umran Malik’s downfall
Umran’s downfall began during IPL 2023 where he failed to impress and was far from consistent with the ball for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The pacer played only 8 matches for SRH in IPL 2023 and managed only 5 wickets while warming the bench for the majority of the season. A series of injuries and a dip in form soon saw Umran suffer a dramatic downfall.
His downfall coincided with the rise of Mayank Yadav in IPL 2024 earlier this year. While Mayank became the cynosure of all eyes after impressing with his ability to consistently clock over 150kph and his accurate line and length, Umran was steadily forgotten and went into oblivion. The SRH team management too lost faith in the young pacer and released him ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction after reducing him to the bench in IPL 2024.
Umran has so far played 26 matches in his IPL career and has 29 wickets to his name. The Jammu Express had recently declared himself fit for the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali 2024 and is expected to take part in the domestic tournament.
Despite the dip in form, Umran remains one of the most promising Indian young pacers around and might find a buyer in the accelerated round at the IPL 2025 mega auction later on Day 2.
