New Delhi: A blockbuster clash awaits the cricket fans as India and England gear up for a mouthwatering white-ball series, which starts with the T20I series today (January 22, Wednesday) at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. It will be the first T20I series between the two sides on Indian soil since 2020 when India bagged the honours 3-2 after a thrilling battle in the five-match affair.
Fans can expect a similar tussle between two exciting teams, who like to play aggressive cricket. Just like in 2020, this series will also feature five matches, followed by a three-ODI series ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE.
Suryakumar Yadav will lead India’s youthful side while seasoned wicket-keeper batter Jos Buttler will captain the English side. This will be England’s first white-ball series under the coaching of Brendon McCullum, who has revolutionised England’s red-ball cricket since taking charge in 2022.
It will be a challenging series for England, who face an Indian team that boasts an incredible home record in T20I cricket.
India’s remarkable record at home
While England will pose a stern challenge to the Men in Blue, the home side head into the series as favourites. The T20 champions haven’t lost a T20I series at home in six years with their last loss coming against Australia in 2018-19 when the visitors claimed a 2-0 win.
Since then India have won a remarkable 14 series in the 16 they have played at home with two ending in draws. During this period, India have beaten almost every top nation including Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia, West Indies, and New Zealand multiple times. The Men in Blue have also steamrolled Afghanistan and Bangladesh at home.
India’s last T20I series at home was against Bangladesh in 2024 when the home side whitewashed their neighbours 3-0.
India are primed to continue their superb home run against England, who will look to avenge the heartbreaking 3-2 defeat they suffered four years ago and the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal loss.
