‘US Has Long Endorsed…’: Antony Blinken on India’s Bid For Permanent Seat in UN Security Council

Washington: As PM Modi’s 3-day US visit comes to a close, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken has reaffirmed their country’s support for India, regarding a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Blinken also spoke for a permanent UNSC seat for Japan and Germany.

While addressing the Summit of the Future at the United Nations, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken batted for a permanent seat for India, Japan and Germany at the UN Security Council and also two permanent seats for Africa among other things.

Antony Blinken said in a statement, “Reforming the UN Security Council to better represent the developing world and more broadly, the world as it is today. The United States believes that this should include two permanent seats for Africa, one rotating seat for Small Island Developing States, permanent representation for Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition to the permanent seats for countries, we’ve long endorsed Germany, Japan and India. The United States supports starting negotiations on Council reforms immediately…The United States is committed to adapting the UN system to reflect this world of today and tomorrow, not the one that existed in 1945…”

Quad Nations’ Joint Statement Bats for Reforming UN Security Council

The nations have highlighted the need and importance to expand the Security Council and open its permanent membership to more nations. The statement reads, “…We will reform the UN Security Council, recognizing the urgent need to make it more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, effective, democratic and accountable through expansion in permanent and non-permanent categories of membership of the UN Security Council. This expansion of permanent seats should include representation for Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean in a reformed Security Council.”
