New Delhi: The US Open will be held across 15 days, starting on a Sunday for the first time since 1968 when the Open era began in tennis, adding an extra day day of main-draw action.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) confirmed that the last Grand Slam of the year will kick off a day earlier than the usual Monday opener for the tournament’s first weekend start.

The 2025 edition of the major tournament will begin on August 24 and stretch till September 7, USTA said in a new statement when fans subscribed for ticket information.

The schedule shift makes US Open in line with the Australian Open, which moved from Monday to Sunday start a year ago and the French Open, the first Grand Slam to switch to 15-day list in 2006.

After this schedule change, the first round of men’s and singles first round matched will be played out over three days from Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. “No further adjustments to the singles main draw schedule after the first round are planned,” the USTA said.

In the earlier 14-day format, the first rounds were completed across three days until 2015, when it was reduced to two. After three consecutive years of record-setting attendance, the additional day will allow main draw footfall to increase by another 70,000.

Wimbledon remains the exception

US Open’s schedule shift means Wimbledon remain the only Grand Slam event that begins on a Monday and stretches for 14 days. Wimbledon decided to schedule matches on the middle Sunday, a traditional day off in 2022, before which the tournament was held for 13 days.

The US Open is expected to get increased revenue from ticket sales, apart from giving more exposure for the sport. The 2025 Australian Open has set attendance records in its 15-day edition.
