Biggest Highlights of US Presidential Elections 2024

The journey to the US Elections voting day began with former US President Donald Trump representing Republicans and the incumbent President Joe Biden representing Democrats. The elections took a surprising turn after Biden decided to drop out of the race to the White House and the current US Vice President Kamala Harris stepped into his shoes. Apart from this massive shift, there have been several key moments in this electoral journey, that have made these elections stand out.

Take a look at the five biggest highlights of the US Presidential Elections 2024…

Joe Biden and His Debate Disaster

In a debate against Donald Trump on June 27, Joe Biden delivered a disastrous performance, where he was seen fumbling several times, forgetting what he had to say and shattering all hopes of his supporters that he stood a chance against Trump. Donald Trump seemed smoother and more vigorous than Biden, who is only three years older than the Republican ex-president.

Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump

Another major highlight of the US Elections is the assassination attempt on Donald Trump; the Republican presidential nominee was shot at, during his rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. A bullet grazed Trump’s ear and he started bleeding. A firefighter, who was attending the rally with his family, had lost his life in the assassination bid. Apart from Pennsylvania, two other assassination attempts were made on Donald Trump; he was given additional security to ensure his safety.

Kamala Harris Steps into Joe Biden’s Shoes

One of the biggest moments of the US Presidential Elections was the stepping down of Joe Biden from the presidential race and US Vice President Kamala Harris stepping into Biden’s shoes on July 21. Biden’s posts on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) read, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.” In another post he said, “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year, Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

In her first reaction, Kamala Harris said in an ‘X’ post, “I am honoured to have the President’s endorsement, and I intend to earn and win this nomination. On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and his decades of service to our country.”

Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris Debate

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris faced each other on the debate stage for the first and possibly the last time on September 11. The two presidential candidates began the debate with a formal introduction and throughout the 90-minute debate, Harris controlled the conversation at times, baiting Trump with jabs at his economic policy, his refusal to concede his 2020 election loss and even his performance at his rallies. Trump, while measured early on, grew more annoyed as the night went on.

Trump-Harris Choose their Running Mate

On Day 1 of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump, who made his first appearance after an assassination bid on him, announced Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate for Vice President. Elected to the Senate in 2022, JD Vance was born and raised in Middletown, Ohio. He joined the Marines and served in Iraq, and later earned degrees from Ohio State University and Yale Law School; he also worked as a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley. Vance’s wife, lawyer Usha Chilukuri Vance, is an Indian American and the mother of their three children.

On August 6, Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a former congressman as her Vice President pick. Walz wasn’t widely known outside of Minnesota before Harris chose him to join her on the Democratic presidential ticket. The Nebraska native was a geography teacher and assistant football coach at Mankato West High School in southern Minnesota before he ran for Congress . He was seen as a centrist, known for his work on veterans issues. Walz was elected governor in 2018, and was reelected in 2022 in an election that gave Democrats full control of state government.

A presidential campaign that has careened through a felony trial, an incumbent president being pushed off the ticket and multiple assassination attempts comes down to a final push across a handful of states on the eve of Election Day. Kamala Harris will spend all of Monday in Pennsylvania, whose 19 electoral votes offer the largest prize among the states expected to determine the Electoral College outcome. The vice president and Democratic nominee will visit working-class areas including Allentown and end with a late-night Philadelphia rally that includes Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey. Donald Trump plans four rallies in three states, beginning in Raleigh, North Carolina and stopping twice in Pennsylvania with events in Reading and Pittsburgh.
