New Delhi: The Earth, as we know, is full of mysteries. There are some places on this planet which evoke a deep sense of awe and reverence for the sheer gigantic proportion of their aura. When it comes to the topic of such places, people tend to wonder: What is the deepest point on this planet? To many, the answer is the Veryovkina Cave.
Where is the Veryovkina Cave?
The famous Veryovkina Cave is located in Abkhazia, considered by global authorities as part of Georgia. The cave’s depth is over 7,000 ft and is widely considered the deepest cave on this planet known to our species. The cave is in the Arabika Massif, on the pass between the Krepost and Zont mountains in the Gagra mountain range of the Western Caucasus. The entrance of the cave is located at 7,497 ft above sea level and the depth of the entrance shaft is 105 ft.
How was the cave named?
The cave was given the name S-115 in 1968 and was later renamed P1-7. But later, the place was named after cave diver Alexander Verëvkin who passed away in 1983 while he was exploring the Su-Akan cave in Russia’s Kabardino-Balkaria.
How did Veryovkina Cave gain attraction?
It was discovered by cavers from Krasnoyarsk in 1968 and back then, only 377 feet of its total depth was discovered. Later, with further expeditions, explorers found out that it is actually the deepest cave on this planet. In 1982, the cave was discovered once again by Moscow’s “Perovo” speleoclub (PSC).
Between 1983 and 1986, the cavers from the same team explored the cave further and found out its depth to be 1,440 ft. Then from that point till 2000, there were rarely any expeditions in the cave. Then from the turn of the millennium till 2015, the cavers explored the bottom of the Veryovkina. But even then, the deepest range of the cave was 1,440 ft.
In June 2016, an expedition team managed to reach a depth of 2,070 ft. In August that year, another expedition team reached a depth of 3,310 ft. In October, the cave’s depth was found to be 4,430 ft by explorers and it became 6,010 ft in February 2017. At that point, it was the world’s second-deepest cave after the Voronya cave. In August of that year, its depth was expanded to 7,057 ft. Several expeditions took place in later years and finally in August 2023, the cave depth was increased to 7,293 ft.
