Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s record, becomes fastest to 14,000 runs in ODIs

New Delhi: Team India star Virat Kohli scripted history as he surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest batter to complete 14,000 runs in ODI cricket. Kohli achieved the stellar feat during the ongoing clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai in the Champions Trophy 2025.

Kohli is only the 3rd batter in the world and the second Indian to complete 14,000 runs in ODIs after Tendulkar and Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara. The star batter headed into the blockbuster clash against Pakistan, needing only 15 runs to reach 14,000 runs in ODIs and managed to breach the elusive mark with a boundary against pacer Haris Rauf in the 13th over of India’s run chase.

Kohli, who is regarded as one of the best batters in the world, is the leading run-getter in ODIs among active batters. The Indian batting maestro has been a dominant force in ODIs over the years and has been churning out runs year after year at an incredible consistency for India. He is also the only batter with 50 centuries in ODI history having broken Tendulkar’s record with the Master Blaster watching from the stands during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Kohli shattered another record held by Tendulkar on Sunday during the India-Pakistan clash in Dubai. The former India skipper completed 14,000 runs in just 287 innings, surpassing Tendulkar, who managed to achieve the feat in 350 innings. Sangakkara, the only other batter with more than 14,000 runs in ODIs, achieved the milestone in 378 ODIs and is now the 3rd quickest to the feat.

Fastest to 14,000 runs in ODIs:

Virat Kohli – 287 innings

Sachin Tendulkar – 350 innings

Kumar Sangakkara – 378 innings

Kohli is currently the 3rd highest run-getter in ODIs with over 14,000 runs at an average of more than 57, including 50 centuries and 73 fifties. The Team India star is in touching distance of surpassing Sangakkara, who finished with 14,234 runs from 404 matches at an average of 41.98 in ODIs. However, Kohli will need to perform remarkably well in his remaining few years in ODIs to even get close to Tendulkar, who tops the elite list with a whopping 18,426 runs.

Virat Kohli will aim to convert his start into big score against Pakistan

Kohli has gotten off to a good start against Pakistan in India’s 242-run chase and will be looking to convert it into a big score at the Dubai International Stadium. The Team India star has not been in the best of form of late and was dismissed cheaply on 22 runs in India’s opener against Bangladesh earlier this week. However, he will be looking to bounce back with an impactful knock to take India home against Pakistan.

Virat Kohli achieved yet another milestone in his career as he surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest to 14,000 runs in ODI history.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
