New Delhi: Star Indian batter Virat Kohli moved up two places while skipper Rohit Sharma dropped a place in the latest ICC Test rankings released on Wednesday. Kohli occupies the eight spot now while Rohit has dropped to the sixth position from previous fifth. Apart from these two Indian stalwarts, young gun Yashasvi Jaiswal has moved up to the seventh position.
Joe Root maintains top spot
Meanwhile, veteran English batter Joe Root continues to maintain his position as the top-ranked batter in the world after the team’s success and his performance in the opening Test match against Sri Lanka in Manchester. Root’s teammate Harry Brook has taken a big jump on the back of scores of 56 and 32 during the first Test match at Old Trafford.
Brook has risen three places overall to the fourth spot, surpassing Pakistan’s Babar Azam, Australia’s Steven Smith and Rohit. Meanwhile Babar, who experienced another flop show in the first Test match, has fallen six places from the shared third to ninth after a rare failure in the first innings in Rawalpindi. Mohammad Rizwan, who smashed a century in the same match has gained seven spots, thereby achieving a career-high rating by moving inside the top 10. He now sits at shared 10th spot.
Ravichandran Ashwin holds top spot
In the bowling department, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin continues to hold the top position among the bowlers while paceman Jasprit Bumrah and left-arm spin bowler Ravindra Jadeja have maintained their third and seventh positions respectively. English seamer Chris Woakes has gained four positions to take the 16th spot and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando is up by 10 spots to sit at 17th position.
Pakistan’s right-arm pacer Naseem Shah (up four spots to 33rd) and England’s Gus Atkinson (up four places to 42nd) have attained career-best ratings following good returns from their recent appearances. Among all-rounders, Jadeja and Ashwin continue to occupy the top two spots while Axar Patel is ranked sixth.
