New Delhi: Former India opener Virender Sehwag took a brutal dig at Mumbai Indians (MI)  batter Rohit Sharma over his struggles in the Powerplay in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Sehwag, who was commentating during MI’s clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Monday, aimed a hilarious swipe at Rohit while he was batting in the middle.

The incident happened during the Powerplay when commentator Akash Chopra highlighted how Rohit hadn’t got much of the strike till the 4th over. Sehwag, his fellow commentator, came up with a cheeky jibe on the Mumbai Indians batter after that. The former India opener said it was good that Rohit is not getting to bat much in the Powerplay as it reduces his chances of getting out.

“Acha hai. Is bahane wo powerplay ke baad tak tike rahenge. Warna, powerplay mein jitni jyada gendein wo khelte hai, utne jyada chances ho jaate hai unke out hone ke. (It’s good. This way, he would still be at the crease after the powerplay. Otherwise, the more balls he faces in the powerplay, the more chances there are of him getting out),” said Sehwag on air.

Rohit, who has not been at his usual best in the Powerplay for Mumbai Indians this season, once again failed to make an impact in their crucial clash against PBKS. The Hitman was dismissed cheaply on 24 off just 21 balls with the help of two fours and a solitary six at a strike rate of 114.29. Rohit was dismissed by spinner Harpreet Brar, trying to play a big shot as he ended up getting caught by Nehal Wadhera.

Rohit has so far managed 329 runs in 13 innings for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 with only three half-centuries under his belt. Rohit has struck at 147.53 in the tournament so far. However, his struggles against the new ball in the Powerplay is a huge worry for the Mumbai Indians ahead of the playoffs.

PBKS thrash Mumbai Indians to secure top-two finish

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by seven wickets on Monday to pip Gujarat Titans and go to the top of the IPL 2025 points table. PBKS have 19 points after 14 matches and are guaranteed to finish in the top two, having booked their spot in Qualifier 1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have a chance to finish on top of the table if they can beat LSG in their last game of the league stage on Tuesday.

However, if RCB fail to beat LSG, they will finish third, behind Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, who will finish in the top two spots.
