New Delhi: Every year, World Hindi Day or Vishwa Hindi Diwas is celebrated on January 10 to promote the Hindi language all over the globe. On January 10, 1975, the first World Hindi Conference was held in Nagpur and the Vishwa Hindi Diwas commemorates that event. It was first celebrated in 2006 and it also marks the occasion when Hindi was first spoken in the United Nations General Assembly in 1949. Ramdhari Singh Dinkar
Ramdhari Singh, popular known by his pen name Dinkar, was a poet, essayist, freedom fighter and academic. He emerged as a poet of rebellion since he wrote nationalist poetry during the freedom movement. His poetry consists of heroic sentiment and he has been hailed as ‘national poet’. A regular in the Hindi Kavi Sammelan and enriched Hindi like Pushkin did for the Russian language.
Maithili Sharan Gupt
Maithili Sharan Gupt is one of the foremost modern Hindi poets. He was a pioneer of Khari Boli (plain dialect) poetry. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan. Mahatma Gandhi gave him the title of ‘Rashtra Kavi’ for his book ‘Bharat-Bharati’ which was widely quoted during the freedom struggle.
Mahadevi Verma
Mahadevi Verma was a poet, essayist and sketch story writer who has a profound impact on the Hindi literature. One of the pillars of the Hindi literature’s Chhayawadi era, she is also known as ‘Modern Meera’. She who worked for the wider society and apart from being a poet, she also worked for social upliftment and women’s welfare which can be seen in her writings. These works, especially her anthology ‘Deepshikha’, are considered memorable in the pantheon of Hindi literature.
Munshi Premchand
The name of Munshi Premchand is bound to come up when we are talking about the greatest Hindi authors. His original name was Dhanpat Rai Srivastava and he is famous for his modern Hindustani literature. A pioneer of Hindi and Urdu social fiction, he was one of the first Indian authors who dealt with caste hierarchies and the plights of women and labourers in his writings. One of the greatest Indian authors, his most notable works include Godaan, Gaban, Karmabhoomi, Idgah and Mansarovar. He wrote over a dozen novels, around 300 short stories and several essays.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan
Harivansh Rai Bachchan wrote at a time when Hindi literature was yet to become popular among the common people. The father of Amitabh Bachchan was a poet and writer of the Nayi Kavita literary movement (romantic upsurge) of early 20th century Hindi literature. A poet of the Hindi Kavi Sammelan, his most famous work is possibly Madhushala.
Jaishankar Prasad
One of the greatest authors India has ever produced, Jaishankar Prasad was a prominent figure in modern Hindi literature and also a pioneer in Hindi theatre. He is also hailed as ‘Chhayavadi Kavi’ for his immense contribution to Hindi literature. The subject of his poetry ranged from romantic to nationalistic, and he avoided the Persian element of Hindi in his writing. His dramas are considered to be most pioneering ones in Hindi and his most famous dramas include Skandagupta, Chandragupta and Dhruvaswamini.
Makhanlal Chaturvedi
Pandit Makhanlal Chaturvedi was a poet and writer who played a key role in the Indian freedom struggle. He is best remembered for his contribution to Chhayavaad, Hindi literature’s Neo-romanticism movement. In 1955, he was awarded the first Sahitya Akademi Award in Hindi for ‘Him Tarangini’ and in 1963, he was honoured with Padma Bhushan. He is also known as the Yug Charan for reinforcing nationalism during the British Raj.
