New Delhi: Former India batsman VVS Laxman praised Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for their great gesture after the star cricketers handed the T20 World Cup trophy to Rahul Dravid. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the final and ended their long-standing ICC Trophy drought.
Indian players were in tears after winning the T20 World Cup as it was a special moment for the team. Indian head coach Rahul Dravid also celebrated by jumping out of his chair and expressed a lot of joy.
Dravid was part of India’s 2003 ODI World Cup team when they lost the final against Australia. After taking over as the head coach of Team India, Rohit and Co. lost the World Test Championship final and ODI World Cup final in 2023 against Australia.
The T20 World Cup 2024 was Dravid’s last assignment and Team India gave him a perfect farewell by lifting the trophy. VVS Laxman said that he had known Dravid for so many years, and the emotions he showed after India’s win meant so much to him.
“Someone like Rahul with whom I have played so much cricket knew him for so many years, but for him to show that emotions, first when the last ball was bowled and then the various conversations he was having with the team members and when he lifted the trophy,” Laxman told BCCI.
“I thought it was a great gesture by Rohit and Virat Kohli to hand over the trophy to him (Dravid) and the way he celebrated by lifting the trophy, it showed how much it meant to each one of them” he added.
He also praised the resilience of Rohit and Co. after they made a brilliant comeback and snatched the victory from South Africa. He said that India were under pressure when the Proteas batters needed 30 runs off 30 balls but the Men in Blue showed great character and pulled the game from the jaws of defeat.
Virat, Rohit and Jadeja will contribute in longer version of the game: VVS Laxman
Laxman congratulated Rohit, Virat and Jadeja for their brilliant T20I career and said that the trio will continue to contribute in the longer version of the game.
“So while they’ve retired from this format, I’m sure that they will continue to prepare the way they did so far in their career and continue to bring laurels to the country. So big congratulations for excellent T20I career, but I’m sure that they’re going to contribute in the longer version of the game and the 50-year format of the game”.
