New Delhi: A war of words erupted between the Office of Dalai Lama and the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi over the reincarnation of next Dalai Lama.
The dispute began after the Dalai Lama’s office clarified its position on the reincarnation of the next Dalai Lama while China claimed its right over the appointment of next spiritual leader.
According to sources, the dispute stems from the opinion piece by Secretary of Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Delhi, Dhundup Gyalpo, in which he stated that if China’s chooses its own Dalai Lama then it won’t make any difference to the people of Tibet, referred as Xizang by China.
Gyalpo had shared the image of the opinion piece published in a newpaser on his acount on X along with he caption “My piece published today on why China should avoid a situation that throws up two Dalai Lamas!”
In response Yu Jing, Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in India, calimed China’s right in appointing the next Dalai Lama.
Taking to X, she wrote, “Recently, we noticed some comments on Xizang-related affairs in some Indian media. Xizang has been part of China since ancient times. Xizang-related affairs are purely China’s internal affairs that brook no foreign interference. Reincarnation of Living Buddhas comes with a set range of rituals and conventions, which has been in existence for several hundred years.”
The post by Jing further intensified the debate with Gyalpo hitting back saying that the for the selection of the 14th Dalai Lama, “no approval of the Chinese Government was needed or sought.”
He further tweeted, “In reality, the Dalai Lama was selected according to the age-old religious beliefs and traditions of the Tibetans and no approval of the Chinese Government was needed or sought.”
