New Delhi: Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane on Sunday scored century in his second match of the County Championship Division Two. The Leicestershire middle-order batter made 102 runs from 192 balls in the second innings against Glamorgan at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

Leicestershire were reduced to 74 for 3 after Glamorgan finished with a clinical 299-run lead in the first innings. Before the team could face any further dents, the international pair of Leicestershire comprising Rahane and Australia’s Peter Handscomb got into the act of innings resurrection.

At stumps on the third evening, Rahane was 47 not out and Handscomb unbeaten on 33, as Leicestershire ended at 144 for 3, trailing by 155, when bad light stopped play with 21.2 scheduled overs remaining. The Indo-Australian pair continued the fightback in the morning of the fourth day with Rahane playing the key role in the partnership.

The 36-year-old 13 boundaries and a six to play an instrumental role in Leicestershire clinching the lead in the second innings to avoid first defeat of the season.

In the 70th over of the Leicestershire second innings, Rahane smashed back-to-back boundaries off Kiran Carlson’s bowling to complete his second century in the County Championship, his first for his current team.

Ajinkya Rahane departs on 102

Ajinkya Rahane was removed by Carlson just less than four overs after completing his 40th first-class century. He was caught by Glamorgan wicketkeeper Chris Cook behind the wickets, ending his 183-run stand with Handscomb for the fourth wicket as the pair kept the opposition bowling attack at bay.

Handscomb continued his brilliant innings after his Indian partner’s departure to take Leicestershire past 300 to gain the lead. The team was 344 for six before the Tea break along with a marginal 45-run lead.
