New Delhi: Sweden’s table tennis player Truls Moregardh went down against China’s Fan Zhendong in the men’s singles finals but didn’t leave the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles on a dull note. He had to settle for a silver, conceding the gold to his Chinese opponent, and also left the audience impressed with an outrageous “snake shot” that he pulled off during the match, which indeed deceived Zhendong.
While table tennis involves the use of four main shots – forehead drive, backhand drive, forehand push, and backhand push, a snake shot is something unusual and unorthodox as well, but is well within the limits of the game. The classic shot also left China’s world number four paddler in thoughts about how to tackle it. Moregardh is winning hearts on the internet as well, as soon as the video of the incident went viral.
The Swedish national knew that he wasn’t coming back after losing three consecutive games, and in the final game, he tried to sign off in style with a ridiculous snake shot. While both continued the rally, Moregardh got the opportunity to hit the ball from under the table (out of his opponent’s sight) as the shot dropped on Zhendong’s side, and then spun back out of his reach as he tried stretching his arm for it but to no avail as the ball fell on the ground.

Zhendong’s dominance
Fan Zhendong secured the gold medal after winning the finals of the men’s singles competition, defeating Truls Moregardh by 1-4 (7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8). Truls won the first game of the match but could not match the agility and intensity of his opponent in the four games ahead, so he managed a silver medal. It is noteworthy that Zhendong won a gold medal in the men’s team event at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and a silver in the men’s singles event. He bettered his performance in the ongoing Paris Olympics by bagging a gold.
