WATCH: Rodrygo scores a stunner as Brazil beat Ecuador in WC qualifiers

New Delhi: Rodrygo scored a brilliant goal for Brazil in the first half of their clash against Ecuador and secured a 1-0 win. The win has put an end to Brazil’s losing streak of three matches in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The Real Madrid star scored a 30th-minute goal from outside the box. Taking the shot from the edge of the box, the attempt deflected off a defender and curved around the wrong-footed shot-stopper and hit the right post to find the back of the net.

The win has helped the five-time World Cup winners move to fourth place in the standings. They have lost back-to-back matches in the competition against Uruguay, Colombia, and Argentina. Brazil are eight points behind the points table leaders Argentina and have two points more than sixth place in Ecuador, which is the last spot that will secure a place in the 2026 World Cup.

This was their first game after their disheartening defeat to Uruguay in the quarter-finals of Copa America 2024. The win still lacked the spark that Brazil is known to bring to the field. Despite their domination with possession, the Selecao were unable to create enough chances throughout the game.

Brazil lacks tactical creativity

There were multiple instances of the yellow canneries making misplaced passes and often struggling to connect in the front of the field and never having the tactical idea to break through Ecuador’s brilliant defence that gave nothing away to Brazil. On the other side, Ecuador kept pressing, with their three forwards constantly threatening Brazil.

The two of Brazil’s shots on target in the first half were made by Rodrygo, who missed a chance with a free kick early on. With Ecuador giving no chance to enter their box, Brazil had to fall back on long-range shots, which produced their first goal. Ecuador, though, looked like they were going to equalise, but their defender, Gabriel Magalhaes, was able to avert Moises Caicedo’s effort through a last-minute clearance from the goal line. Brazil will next face Paraguay at Asuncion and hope to perform better than Friday’s game.
