New Delhi: Under pressure to regain his form in red-ball cricket, Rohit Sharma returned where it all began for him as a cricketer. The Indian men’s cricket team captain, who is going through one of the worst slumps in his career, has decided to join the practice session with his Mumbai teammates. Mumbai will return to action for the second phase of the Ranji Trophy 2024 against Jammu and Kashmir from January 23 to 26 in Mumbai.
Rohit’s return to his roots indicates that the veteran batter will play Mumbai’s next Ranji clash to regain his red-ball form. Rohit endured a horrendous outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia recently and even dropped himself from the playing X1 of the final Test in Sydney.
Following the disastrous series, which India lost 1-3, Rohit and other out-of-form batters were advised to return to domestic cricket to get the basics right. Rohit scored 31 runs in five innings at a lowly average of 6.20.
It was reported on Monday that Rohit had informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) about his desire to practice with the Mumbai Ranji team and the reports turned out to be true with visuals and pictures of Rohit reaching Wankhede and practicing with his teammates going viral on social media.

Will India stars play Ranji to regain form?
While Rohit turned up for the practice session, it is still not confirmed whether he will play the Ranji match against J & K. After the gruelling series Down Under, India head coach Gautam Gambhir stressed that players, regardless of their stature, should participate in domestic cricket.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is also set to return to action in the Ranji Trophy for Punjab to regain his mojo in red-ball cricket. Gill looked a pale shadow of his former self in the BGT 2024-25 and will look to spend some much-needed time on the pitch. It
It is believed that BCCI will consider the Ranji Trophy participation while selecting the Test team in future.
If India’s stalwarts decide to play Ranji, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant will play for Delhi against Ravindra Jadeja’s Saurashtra starring in Rajkot, Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal will feature for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir in Mumbai while KL Rahul will play for Karnataka against Punjab against Gill in Bengaluru.
