New Delhi: The Constitution of India is the most important document in our country. It is the supreme legal document which governs India. The document has laid down the framework that defines the fundamental political code, procedures, structure, powers, and duties of government institutions. Also, it has set out fundamental rights, directive principles, and the duties of citizens. It is the world’s longest written national constitution. While the Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26, it must be noted that the day is different from the Constitution Day. In this article, we will take a look at the difference between the two.

What is the Constitution Day?

Also known as the ‘Samvidhan Divas’, the Constitution Day is celebrated every year on November 26 in India. The day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Indian Constitution which came into effect from January 26, 1950.

In October 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that November 26 would be celebrated as the Constitution Day. In November 2015, the government officially announced the celebration of the Constitution Day. The day is celebrated to promote Constitution values among citizens. It must be noted that the Constitution Day is not a public holiday but several government departments celebrate it. In schools, students are taught about the Preamble and salient features of the Indian Constitution and various programs are organised all over the country related to it, including quiz and essay competitions.

What is the Republic Day?

Every year on January 26, the Republic Day is celebrated in India, commemorating the Constitution’s adoption and its coming to effect. While the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, it came into effect on January 26, 1950. The date January 26 was chosen as it was on that day in 1930 that the Congress declared ‘Purna Swaraj’ from the British colonial rule.

The Constitution replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of India, thus turning the nation from a Dominion into a Republic. The Republic Day is a public holiday in India and is the most day along with the Independence Day. On this day, parades, political speeches, cultural events and ceremonies take place all over India, with the main ceremonies taking place in Delhi. While the Constitution Day celebrates the adoption of the Constitution, the Republic Day celebrates the moment when India became a Republic and began a new journey in its history.

India celebrates Constitution Day on November 26 and Republic Day on January 26. The Constitution Day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949, while Republic Day marks its enactment in 1950, transforming the nation into a Republic.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
