New Delhi: In the battle against infertility, In vitro fertilization (IVF) offers a ray of hope for many couples who want to achieve their dream of parenthood. However, the path to success is paved with both hope and heartbreak. Recently, a group of researchers have developed a pill for couples that may increase the chances of pregnancy who are struggling to conceive with IVF treatment. As per reports, the initial trials of the drug called OXO-001 showed promising results.
The pill acts directly on the inner lining of the womb to improve the embryo implantation process during the fertility treatment procedure. However, the process is in clinical trials. While IVF may not be the guaranteed solution despite advancements in technology. Understanding the reasons behind IVF failure can help couples navigate the emotional rollercoaster and make informed decisions moving forward.
In conversation with News9, Dr Shruti N Mane, Consultant Fertility & IVF expert, Motherhood Fertility & IVF, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai said, “IVF success hinges on a delicate balance of factors. A woman’s age significantly impacts egg quality, with the number and health of eggs declining as she ages. This decline reduces the likelihood of successful fertilization and development of healthy embryos. Similarly, sperm health plays a vital role. Low sperm count, poor motility (movement), or abnormal morphology (shape) can all hinder fertilization rates.”
“Even if fertilization occurs, not all embryos develop normally. Chromosomal abnormalities can prevent a viable pregnancy. Underlying medical conditions like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or hormonal imbalances can also become hurdles. These conditions can hinder implantation, the crucial stage where the embryo attaches to the uterine lining for pregnancy,” added Dr Mane.
Additionally, lifestyle choices like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and obesity can negatively impact both egg and sperm quality, further reducing IVF success rates.
