When legends of the world of cricket united on one platform

Covering the World Championship of Legends for Cricket in Birmingham, UK was exciting. I got an opportunity to experience the history of cricket legends. Edgbaston Stadium, a world-class venue, with about 20,000 supporters in attendance, has joy and excitement in the air. Impressively, around 70 million people tuned in on TV, OTT platforms, and social media to see India vs. Pakistan, the “Father of All Cricket Rivalries.”

Champions corner

The atmosphere in the stadiums was electric, with supporters remembering their cricket heroes’ glory days. Interviews with renowned players such as Suresh Raina, Aaron Finch, Darren Sammy, Yuvraj Singh, Shahid Afridi, and many others was an exciting affair.

Season 1 of the World Championship of Legends approved by the England and Wales Cricket Board was played between the 3rd of July and 13th of July. It was a T-20 cricket contest between 6 countries in a single round-robin format in 18 matches.

WCL’s next move was to sign some of cricket’s top personalities. The league has one of the most outstanding player rosters, with both legends and current stars who are not under contract with their respective boards. This combination promotes a high level of competition and enthusiasm.

The World Championship of Legends season provided viewers with the opportunity to re-live the game of their favourite cricketers, while also allowing players to relive their previous best moments. I met numerous renowned players, like Brett Lee and Chris Gayle and Kevin Pietersen.

“Look, I’ve enjoyed the 2003 World Cup playing against India in the final. You know, we had a wonderful win there,” said Brett Lee, captain of the Australia Legends team.

Cricket Universe Boss, Chris Gayle said in an interview, “I mean being world champions twice, you know, that’s something fantastic. Winning the championship as well was my personal point. When you get two centuries, you know, we’ll get into Double Century World Cup as well.”

Glam Slam

Following the success of the IPL, WCL incorporated Bollywood into its structure. Movie stars Ajay Devgn and Jacqueline Fernandez were involved in the league. This mix of cricket and Bollywood has proven to be a winning combination which increased the league’s popularity.

While the WCL’s early success is clear, it’s too early to call it the second-biggest league after the IPL. Maintaining consistency and continuity will be key to sustaining and building on this success.
