New Delhi: The Paris Olympics are set to take place from July 26 to August 11. India had secured seven medals in the previous edition of the Olympics. Indian players are participating in 16 sports in the Paris Olympics 2024. India has only won 10 gold medals in the history of the Olympics.
India’s most successful sport at the Olympics
The men’s field hockey has been the most successful sport for India in the Olympics. Field hockey has won 12 medals so far, of which eight are Gold medals along with one silver and three bronze medals.
Indian Hockey team started their Olympic medal journey in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Indian team won the gold medal at the 1928 Olympics. Late Dhyan Chand’s contribution was phenomenal in the rise of Indian hockey at the Olympics. Under Dhyan Chand’s leadership, India scored 29 goals and didn’t concede a single goal at their first Olympics.
Indian team dominated the Olympics as they completed a memorable hat-trick of gold medals in the Olympics, they won gold in 1928 Amsterdam, gold in Los Angeles 1932 and the Berlin 1936 Olympics.
After 1936 the Olympics were canceled due to World War II, but the Olympics came back in 1948 and India again started the hockey campaign with the same dominance. This time India won the gold medal as the Independent nation. Again they struck with hat-tricks of gold medals as they repeated the feat in the 1952 and 1956 Olympics.
India became the first team to win back-to-back six gold medals in hockey, But later on, the Indian team saw their downfall from the most successful sport in the Olympics. In the 1972 Olympics, India finished in the seventh position but came back at the 1980 Olympics Games where they became Champions again.
After the 1980 Olympics Indian hockey team didn’t win a single medal in hockey for 41 years but the drought came to an end with India winning a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
