New Jersey: Representative Andy Kim makes history by becoming the first Korean American to join the US Senate seat from New Jersey after defeating Tammy Murphy.
The 42-year-old Senator emerged victorious after a tumultuous race, born out of a corruption scandal that led to former Senator Robert Menendez’s resignation.
Who is Andy Kim?
Son of immigrant parents, Andy is a 42-year-old Democrat born on 12 July 1982 in Boston and raised in South Jersey. He studied political science at the University of Chicago and at Magdalen College, Oxford. Shortly afterwards, Kim also worked as a civilian advisor at the Department of State, serving in Afghanistan under the Obama Administration.
Kim served as the US representative from New Jersey’s third congressional district since 2019. He also worked in the US Department before his election to Congress in 2018.
His journey to the Senate began after Menendez was convicted of peddling his political influence for bribes of gold bars, $48,000 in cash and a luxurious Mercedes-Benz convertible.
Despite Murphy’s powerful campaign, Kim prevailed by emphasising on the need to dismantle the entrenched “line” system on New Jersey ballots, which favoured candidates backed by political bosses.
