New Delhi: Indian shooters Sarabjot Singh and Manu Bhaker delighted India by clinching a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday. The Indian pairing beat South Korea’s Oh Ye-jin and Lee Wonho, recording a 16-10 victory following 13 series in the final round. This was India’s second medal at the ongoing Games.
While it was a second bronze medal for Bhaker who had opened India’s account with the same metal in the women’s 10m air pistol event on Sunday, her partner Sarabjot Singh bagged his maiden Olympic medal. Both were right on targets and fared better than their opponents, winning eight out of the 13 series. Sarabjot and Bhaker were qualified for the bronze medal shoot-off on Monday with a score of 580 in the 10m air pistol mixed team qualification round.
Bhaker has been an ex-competitor of the Khelo India Games and is a Target Olympic Podium Scheme Athlete as well. Her compatriot, Sarabjot Singh, who is featuring in his first ever Olympic Games, has also been a Khelo India athlete since 2019 and has participated in four editions of Khelo India Games. He is a Target Olympic Podium Scheme athlete as well. The 21-year-old shooter showed grit and his determination and hard work finally bore him fruits.
Who is Sarabjot Singh?
Sarabjot Singh was born on August 30, 2001, and hails from Dheen village of Ambala, Haryana, and comes from a farming household. He is the son of Jatinder Singh, a farmer, and Hardeep Kaur, a homemaker. He was a student at the DAV College in Chandigarh and currently trains under coach Abhishek Rana at Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi.
His interest in shooting rose at the tender age of 13 when he saw a few kids wielding air guns at a makeshift range during a summer camp. He harboured hopes of becoming a footballer as well but the view of those kids aiming at paper targets with pistols made a permanent space in his mind. It was in 2014 that he conveyed to his father that he wanted to pursue shooting.
Being a farmer, his father told him that the sport is pretty expensive but that didn’t hold him back. Sarabjot’s resilience and passion for the sport made him win the Gold medal at the Junior World Championship, Suhl in 2019.
