Who is smarter boys or girls? Study finds brain of teen girls aged faster in pandemic

New Delhi: Who is more smarter boys or girls? This has been an unwavering discussion for ages, but no one has been able to come to one conclusion. Decoding this, a recent study has revealed that a teenage girl’s brain may have aged faster than the boys during the COVID-19 lockdowns. This has happened due to the lack of socialisation that has probably affected the brains of both genders in an unbalanced way.

The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. For the study, the researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle compared the MRI scans of the teenager’s pre and post-lockdown brain health. They found that girls’ brains appeared to be on an average of 4.2 years more than expected after the lockdowns. When this data was compared with the boys, it was found that the boys of the same age group were 1.4 years older. The data is concerning because this may create an impact on their growth, development and learning procedure.

Cortical thinning in the brain noticed

In 2018, scientists gathered MRI scans from 160 9 to 17-year-olds 2018 and used them to examine how the brain’s cortex normally slimmed during the school era. Further, it was seen that some cortical thinning is normal and vital for the growth or the maturation and specialisation in children.

After the lockdown period, the scientists gathered the MRI IN 2021 and 2022 from the same participants in the age group of 12-16 years. It was shocking to know that since against the higher cortical thinning in one area of the boy’s brains, 30 areas of the brain of the girls showed cortical thinning across the hemisphere and lobes.

Female brains change across varied brain regions

The ageing of the brain region is also linked to the eye health of a person, this may potentially affect the processing of faces that was noticed in both the boys and girls. In females, brain changes were noted across the different regions of the brain. Later it was found that some of the affected areas of the brain were related to social cognitive health which played a major role in processing emotions and, on the other hand, figuring out facial expressions.
