Why does double-Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker wants to add ‘Doctor’ next to her name?

New Delhi: Young Indian shooter Manu Bhaker has shot to stardom in the country in the aftermath of her success at the Paris Olympics 2024 in August. She claimed two bronze medals in the Paris Olympics 2024 in the women’s 10m air pistol individual event and the 10m air pistol mixed team event, pairing with Sarabjot Singh.

Ever since her return to India, the Haryana athlete has constantly attended public events, interviews and talk shows to, either receiving felicitation or expressing about her grinding period from Tokyo to Paris. She suffered mal-function with her gun three years ago in the Japanese capital, failing to qualify for the final of her individual event.

Manu’s comeback story will go down as one of the inspiring journeys in the Indian sporting ecosystem. The latest event Manu has attended is a dinner organised by the Delhi State Rifle Association (DSRA) vice-chairman Jaspal Singh Marwah in the Vasant Kunj area in the national capital to honour the shooter along with her coach Jaspal Rana, who is the chairman of the state association.

Manu Bhaker’s mother’s PhD wish

During the event, Manu was said to express her gratitude towards the DSRA and mentioned about preparing for the next Olympics in Los Angeles after the completion of her current break. The 22-year-old has completed her post graduation in public administration, and wishes to continue her studies further. She revealed at the DSRA event that her mother Sumedha Bhaker wanted her to have the doctor (Dr) title next to her name, and hence, she will look to pursue PhD at some stage later, according to a recent report.

Manu Bhaker expressed her gratitude to DSRA on this occasion and said that she is currently on a break from the sport, after a break of a few months, she will return to the shooting range again and then start preparing for the next Olympics. Manu said that ‘I have done post graduation in public administration, I will continue my studies further, I want to do PhD because my mother wants that my name should have the title of doctor.’
