Why Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated twice a year: Significance explained

Mumbai: Hanuman Jayanti is a highly revered Hindu festival that honours Lord Hanuman, the ardent devotee of Lord Rama. Worshipped as a symbol of strength, courage, and devotion, Lord Hanuman is also known as Sankatmochan, the remover of obstacles. Devotees believe that he continues to reside on Earth during Kalyug (the current age), offering protection and guidance to those who sincerely seek his blessings.

While many people observe Hanuman Jayanti with deep devotion, what might come as a surprise is that this festival is not celebrated just once, but twice a year. If you’ve ever wondered why there are two Hanuman Jayantis, this article explains the significance behind both dates and the fascinating legends associated with them.

When Is Hanuman Jayanti in 2025?

This year, Hanuman Jayanti will be celebrated on 12 April 2025, which coincides with Chaitra Purnima (the full moon day in the Hindu month of Chaitra). According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), the Purnima Tithi will begin at 3:20 AM on 12 April and end at 5:52 AM on 13 April. Hence, the main observance will take place on 12 April.

Why Is Hanuman Jayanti Celebrated Twice?

Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on two different dates every year: once on Chaitra Purnima and again on Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi. These two occasions mark different events in the life of Lord Hanuman.

Chaitra Purnima is celebrated as Hanuman’s birthday, the day he regained consciousness after being struck by Lord Indra.

Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, is observed to honour the day when Goddess Sita granted Hanuman the boon of immortality, recognising his unparalleled devotion.

The Two Legends Behind Hanuman Jayanti

1. The Chaitra Purnima Story: According to a popular legend, Hanuman once mistook the Sun for a ripe fruit and rushed to eat it. Alarmed by this act, Lord Indra struck Hanuman with his thunderbolt, rendering him unconscious. Witnessing this, Lord Vayu (the Wind God and Hanuman’s father) withdrew air from the universe in anger, causing widespread panic. Eventually, the gods restored Hanuman’s health and blessed him with divine powers. This event took place on Chaitra Purnima, which is why this date is observed as Hanuman Jayanti.

2. The Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi Story: Another legend states that on Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi, Goddess Sita was deeply moved by Hanuman’s unwavering devotion and bestowed upon him the boon of immortality. This day is thus celebrated as a symbolic rebirth—his divine recognition and eternal service to dharma.

Both celebrations of Hanuman Jayanti hold deep spiritual significance and reflect different aspects of Lord Hanuman’s life—his birth and his divine blessing of immortality. Devotees mark these days with fasting, prayers, and by reading the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundar Kand, seeking his divine protection and strength.

Whether observed in April or during Diwali season, Hanuman Jayanti continues to be a festival that inspires faith, discipline, and courage among millions of devotees across the world.
