Why has Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat resigned from Indian Railways post?

New Delhi: Ace Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Friday submitted her resignation from the post with the Indian Railways  amid reports of joining politics ahead of the Haryana elections.

The 30-year-old announced retirement from professional wrestling following the heartbreak of missing out on a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 last month. A day after her meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Vinesh shared her resignation letter on her X (formerly known as Twitter) handle.

“Serving Indian Railways has been a memorable and proud time of my life,” she posted on X with a picture of her resignation letter.

“At this point in my life, I have decided to separate myself from the railway service and have submitted my resignation to the competent authorities of the Indian Railways. I will always be grateful to the Indian Railway family for this opportunity given to me by the Railways in the service of the nation,” she added.

Vinesh Phogat joins Congress Party

Vinesh, who hails from Haryana’s Balali village, was employed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) with Northern Railways. Later in the day, Vinesh along with Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia joined Congress party, though she mentioned family reasons to resign from the railway posts. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge

“Sir, keeping in view of my family circumstances/personal reasons, I am unable to perform my duties as OSD/sports. Therefore without any pressure, I wish to tender my resignation,” she said.

“It is kindly requested that my resignation with immediate effect may be accepted from Northern Railway. One month salary will be deposited in lieu of my one month notice period,” she added.

Vinesh was disqualified from women’s 50kg wrestling freestyle event after being found overweighed on the day of her gold medal match. She appealed before the Court of Sports for Arbitration but it was rejected as the highest court backed the rules of United World Wrestling (UWW).
