New Delhi: The International Youth Day is a special day, observed on August 12 annually, dedicated to recognising and celebrating young people’s valuable contributions to society’s advancement. It also serves as an opportunity to acknowledge and address the unique challenges and obstacles that youth encounter. This day is marked by various activities such as awareness campaigns, community concerts, and events designed to illuminate the socio-economic and socio-political issues impacting young people in every corner of the world.
What is the importance of International Youth Day?
International Youth Day, a global celebration on August 12 every year, unites us to raise awareness of youth issues and celebrate their potential as partners in today’s global society.
International Youth Day stands as a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the innate potential of young people, recognising their capacity to shape the future of their nations and the world at large. At the same time, the day serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and obstacles that youth encounter, calling for collective action to address these issues.
Young individuals’ impact extends across various areas, from driving community progress to advocating for environmental conservation and engaging in various social initiatives.
The day also sheds light on the difficulties young people face worldwide. Many children lack access to basic education, struggle with hunger, and endure the harsh realities of poverty, hindering their overall well-being.
When was the day started?
The idea for International Youth Day was suggested in 1991 by young people gathered in Vienna, Austria, for the first World Youth Forum of the United Nations System session. The Forum recommended declaring an International Youth Day to support the United Nations Youth Fund. This crucial entity works hand in hand with youth organisations to make this day a reality.
In 1998, a resolution was adopted proclaiming August 12 as International Youth Day at the first session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, which the Government of Portugal hosted in cooperation with the United Nations (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998). This recommendation was endorsed by the fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/54/120 entitled “Policies and programmes involving youth” (December 17, 1999).
The Assembly recommended organising public information activities to support the day and promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth, adopted by the General Assembly in 1996.
Security Council Resolution 2250 (December 9, 2015) on Youth, Peace and Security represents an unprecedented acknowledgement of the urgent need to engage young peacebuilders in promoting peace and countering extremism and positions youth as important partners in global efforts.
